Well, the original six pups, Nura and Natura, Melville and Neutron, Miranda and Maureen have all moved on to their new lives from Washington State to Texas. They are all terrific creatures, each and every one. But as we all know, only a few of all the pups that start out as future guide dogs fulfill that promise. We're happy that two of our original pups are serving Guide Dogs for the Blind and that a second round of great dogs are with us in North Texas.

So eventhough our first dogs are off on their own new venture and this blog has been retired, please feel free to read back through the exciting first year and a half of the great pups of the Lone Star Puppy Raisers.

Temple Grandin - What Brilliance!!

"Of course animals have emotions! There are thousands of pages of studies that have been written about it!"

That was just one of the many pearls of wisdom from one of TIME Magizine's 2010 Most Influential People during her forty-minute talk to a crowd of over 600 attendees at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium last night.

Whether about horses, ferrets, cows, pigs, future guide dogs or autism, Dr. Temple Grandin delivered a fact-filled presentation that left numerous question-answer participants clammoring for more.

Dr. Grandin has a fully-packed schedule of speaking engagements during her four-day tour of North Texas, from Sulphur Springs to Fort Worth. We're just thrilled that she made the time to wow our crowd on behalf of Lone Star Puppy Raisers Thursday night.

Day Break Hosts Cynthia Izaguirre and Ron Corning with 'Iza' and 'Ron'

"Day Break" hosts Ron Corning and Cynthia Izaguirre got big surprises from Lone Star Puppy Raisers on this morning's show. They came at the end of the show and after an earlier spot about LSPR and Temple Grandin's visit next month to speak on our behalf.

Group leader Dave Adams was surrounded in the studio by a cadre of raisers that make up LSPR along with puppy 'Fred', poster boy for National Guide Dog Month.

The surprise came out on the mall when pups were presented to Ron and Cynthia. Ron actually knew about it all along, but Cynthia's pup 'IZA' (pronounced 'eeezah') was the surprise that was up Ron's sleeve.

"Oh, she looks just like me!" Cynthia beamed. Ron joked, "yeah, I think she peed on my leg earlier!" That Ron has a great sense of puppy raisin' humor!!

Melville, I will miss the way you somersault in between people’s legs, how you make loud noises when you yawn, that your favorite place to play is in the bathtub, your free-spirited personality, and most of all - the way you love unconditionally.

You were the first of the original six Lone Star puppies to arrive and the last to leave. Sunday I am going to say goodbye and not farewell because down the road, I hope we see each other again. Goodbye my little sidekick, now go make me proud! Lindsey

Maureen, Nura, Miranda, Natura all returned to San Rafael this week. Melville returns this coming Sunday. All special pups in their own way...we know they'll make us Texas Proud.

It's been the most wonderful 13 months with our precious little future guides...to say the least. This past Sunday, we celebrated our last meeting before we deliver our pups back to GDB for 'college' in a few short days.

What an emotional meeting it was! Dave and Beth got our tear ducts going with this quote and expressions of appreciation and pride for what we've accomplished and for the support from our North Texas community. GDB grads Chris Bowman (Ashby), Holly McKnight (Pollyann) and Laurel Wheeler (Stockard) then opened the floodgates, each with their tear-jerking stories about what having a guide means to them. They turned half a box of tissues into mush for the nearly thirty attendees. Kent Ladymon introduced a touching video tribute to our club with a beautiful remembrance of the year, produced by his wife Susan and daughter, Leigh-Anne. 'Nope, not a dry eye in the place.

Beth and Dave presented a beautiful Certificate of Appreciation and GDB Proud Puppy Raiser lapel pin to each puppy raiser. Before the meeting ended, everyone at the meeting signed Texas Bandanas with well-wishes for each of the pups.

About the Year
We partnered with organizations like Lighthouse for the Blind, the Hope Center 4 Autism and The American Foundation for the Blind. We hosted Acting Guide Dogs President and CEO, Morgan Watkins who fired up the crowd at one of our fundraisers in Dallas. We greeted thousands of troops at DFW and met Army Chief of Staff, General George William Casey. The General liked the pups so much, he had the photo of him with the pups posted on the official U.S. Army website. We visited retirement communities, talked to Brownie Troops and Boy Scouts, visited elementary schools, Lion's Clubs and even took the tour at Cowboy's Stadium--yes the pups got to play on the field. We went to Austin and visited the Texas School for the Blind and the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for the Blind, and even dropped in at the State Capitol to visit one of our State Representatives. The pups visited the Austin Museum of Art and were entertained at a performance of The Nutcracker at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. We raised funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind like we never knew we could.

We accomplished all this and more, in addition to teaching the pups everything they needed to know and socializing them in preparation for their next phase of training. We were rewarded with GDB's appointment of Sandi Alsworth to be our Community Service Representative for Lone Star Puppy Raisers--that put us in the 'big time.'

Here's more exciting news: Our little puppy poster boy "Fred" (being raised by eleven year-old, Hannah Nederhoff) was selected to be the cover shot of GDB's 2012 calendar. Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance dog food loved Fred so much, he'll be on their dog food bags throughout September, during National Guide Dog Month.

As if that weren't enough, on October 6th at 8PM, Temple Grandin, PhD will be speaking on our behalf at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium about the incredible human-animal bond and her ground-breaking work across numerous fields. You've likely seen the Golden Globe, seven category award-winning movie, Temple Grandin.

The foregoing is all great, but the real story here is about 25.2 million blind people living in the United States (over 600,000 in Texas, the second largest blind population in the U.S., and more in Canada) that have the possibility of receiving one of these life-changing partners.

We’ve had a chance to meet some Texas GDB grad teams. Texans and their Guides like American Foundation for the Blind volunteer, Holly McKnight of Arlington and her Guide Pollyann, ALCON analyst, Chris Bowman and his Guide Ashby (watch this video: http://www.wfaa.com/news/health/Transplant-pioneers-reunite--128112338.html), high school student John Vickers and his Guide, Marcella, UTA student Laurel Wheeler and her Guide Stockard (Stockard understands commands in French) and Austin resident and interim President and CEO of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Morgan Watkins and his Guide, Will (Will understands commands in Texan)--all incredibly gifted people. THEY and the other 2,200+ guide dog teams in the U.S. and Canada and all that have gone before them and will come after them truly give us the passion for puppy raising.

Looking ahead, we see new puppies, new puppy raisers, new friends and supporters and all the new opportunities for our continued success. It's been a great year. We can't wait for the next one!

An Evening with Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin

Time Magazine has named her one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World.”

And Dr. Temple Grandin comes to Southern Methodist University's McFarlin auditorium on October 6, 2011 at 8:00PM on behalf of Lone Star Puppy Raisers and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Dr. Grandin has received numerous awards including the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Livestock Conservation Institute, named a Distinguished Alumni at Franklin Pierce College and received an honorary doctorate from McGill University, University of Illinois, and Duke University. She has also won prestigious industry awards including the Richard L. Knowlton Award from Meat Marketing and Technology Magazine and the Industry Advancement Award from the American Meat Institute and the Beef Top 40 industry leaders and the Lifetime Achievement Award from The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Her work has also been recognized by humane groups and she received several awards. HBO has recently premiered a movie about Temple’s early life and career with the livestock industry. The movie received seven Emmy awards, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award. In 2011, Temple was inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

Dr. Grandin is a past member of the board of directors of the Autism Society of America. She lectures to parents and teachers throughout the U.S. on her experiences with autism. Articles and interviews have appeared in the New York Times, People, Time, National Public Radio, 20/20, The View, and the BBC.

Dr. Grandin will be available before and after her talk to sign copies of her seven, best-selling books.

Based on what we know about John and Marcella's training experience and the complete seriousness with which they approached the entire process, it shouldn't be any surprise to us at the huge success that they've had since returning home.

From all accounts, it's been flawless...well, let's just hear from it from John:

"Hi! How are you doing? I hope all is well. Thank you for coming to my graduation. I hope to see you soon. I wanted to let you know how Marcella is doing. On the airplane home, she did good. We have been out many times with Marcella and she is just cool. I have been really happy with her guide work! She really loves her toys that I got her at the gdb-gift-shop. Mo, my pet dog and her play and play. Mo is so glad that he has a friend now!--

The Dance...

Our Texas Stars Return Home

John and his entourage arrived home last Sunday--only two hours late--to a group of supporters and a camera crew from DFW's Univision Chanel 23. It had been a fun-filled and packed three weeks in San Rafael but now it was time to be HOME. John's mom Lisa, and friends David Elliott and Jessica Evans, Holly McKnight and her Guide Pollyann, accompanied John and met all the well-wishers at baggage claim.

Some weeks ago, our Univision 23 Amigos contacted Lone Star Puppy Raisers offering to do a story about us for their morning show, "Despierta America" (Wake Up America). Of course we said, "Si" but we had una problema pequena...the entire interview would be done in Espanol!

Lucky for us, John and Lisa are fluent in Spanish and offered to be the stars of the show. Perfecto. Filming and interviews are continuing as schedules permit and we expect John and Lisa to be on the morning show LIVE within the next couple weeks. We'll keep you posted...

The Dance

How many times have you heard some act of beauty referred to as a "Dance?" That's easy; lots of times, we ALL have. Things of beauty..."The Dance."

Guide Dogs for the Blind--Let the Dance Begin

Last Saturday, we personally got to witness one of those Dances take place. It began with a surprise appearance of our North Texas resident and soon-that-afternoon-to-be, GDB grad, John Vickers and Guide Marcella at the GDB Campus. No doubt, eleven other such performances were taking place simultaneously somewhere on that 10 acres.

We'd been posting John's comments and getting a taste of what training had been like--all the rehersals. So to see the culmination of those three intense weeks in the beautiful dance of this new Guide Dog Team was the equivalent of getting to witness the dance performance of a lifetime.

John and Marcella nearly lept onto this day's stage that morning from the GDB dormitory with heads held high, shoulders back and a firm confidence and sense of purpose for the first act--a trip to the gift shop. The only thing missing in this performance was music from the Heavens.

It's a graceful rhythm between Guide and Handler, the silent communication and subtle signals through the harness, from handler to pup and pup to handler. Marcella's tail pointed to the sky, as if another sensor of their environment, her gaze flashing between her horizon's paths and obstacles to John's face with his utterance of a command or word of encouragement. The confident, quick pace to achieve the command from the graceful hand signal, the lauditory praise at the completion of the act, the predictable puppy's excitement of finishing a flawless performance.

It's a beautiful thing that Guide Dogs for the Blind does..."The Dance"...putting these teams together, giving pups purpose, giving humans freedom and independence...inspiring thousands of volunteers...all the behind the scenes performances and rehersals of the trainers, support staff, administration and leadership...to putting on the lovely, touching ceremony known as graduation...the last formal act of the The Dance for this glorious day.

Morning clouds and light-jacket temperatures gave way to a glorious Northern California day as the sun shone brightly on the twelve newest Guide Dog teams graduating last Saturday at GDB's San Rafael campus. The emerald green grounds, perfectly manicured and as inviting as ever were once again the venue for the 725th celebration, bringing the total number of GDB graduated teams to a whopping 13,176!

GDB's Beautiful Grounds--A Pathway to a New Future

A crowd of about 250, including graduates' family members and friends, puppy raisers, guests, local residents and about 30 four-legged supporters filled the beautiful setting.

Acting President and CEO of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Morgan Watkins fired up the crowd with his passionate, always inspiring opening remarks along with heart-felt citations of appreciation to all that make GDB what it is today. And this day was what it was all about...the new Guide Dog teams and the seasoned veterans, graduating with their new Guides.

The ceremony began with Comencement for the 4 graduating Breeders, including 'Charity,' a beautiful Yellow Lab raised in Aurora, Colorado by veteran (Charity is pup # 17) puppy raisers and club co-leaders, Caroline and Bill Wriston. Walter Sanford, Charity's breeder-keeper for the Oregon campus was also in attendance. What made Charity's graduation especially sweet was that her dam, 'Salina,' was in the audience to witness the ceremony. Salina is a gorgeous Black Lab and Charity is from her first litter. Bill engouraged those in the crowd that were thinking of getting involved with GDB to do so, "your heart will get hooked!"

The twelve grads comprised a group ranging in age from 16 years old to 50-something, with the men outnumbering the women 7 to 5. The grad with the most GDB experience was there to receive his 4th Guide. There were six, first-time grads. Grads came from Florida; Canada; Kentucky; New York; California; Arizona; and, Texas.

A 725th Grad Receives His First Guide

After the commencement, Sirena Carrol, the first grad this day to receive her new Guide "Tony," sang her absolutely tear-jerking rewrite of Bett Midler's 'The Rose.' Sirena's lyrics paid tribute to everyone in the Guide Dogs for the Blind family and she didn't leave a dry eye in the place. It was a beautiful and fitting end to another absolutely perfect day at Guide Dogs for the Blind.

If you've never been to a GDB Graduation, you simply must make plans to go! Graduations take place every three weeks at the GDB campus; please go. You will be completely happy you did!

"Oh no!" Marcella had a little accident tonight in the room. We went in to San Francisco Monday morning and today in the morning. She ran me into a person but I had to address that to her.

I'm sorry I have not had the time to keep everybody posted. I went to the GDB gift shop on Monday after lunch. I got many toys for her. She likes them alot."

Hey John, no apology necessary, it's not like you haven't had a ton to learn and lots to accomplish...and how can you help it if some mere mortal, sighted person steps in your way?? All good learning for everyone involved...

This Just In From John Vickers

"Hi how are you doing?"

"I went downtown to San Francisco and did some crossings with Marcella. She did quite well. Today there has not been much going on. We also did a bus to lounge yesterday. And I did great, but Marcella helped me alot. So you could say that we both did good. Tomorrow we will be doing another bus to lounge. This is my second week. And it seems like the time has just gone by so fast."

It sure has John. We can't wait for this next week to buzz by too and for Graduation on Saturday!!

"I'm loving Marcella more and more each day.

Today we worked on addressing Guide work errors and how to get your dog's attention when he or she becomes distracted. She has not really had any distractions. We went to get a coffee today. Just so we have an idea of what it is like working inside public places. And Marcella did fantastic she sat down beside me and did not move. I can't wait until my graduation. Have a great night."

Guide Dogs for the Blind on National Public Radio

NPR reporter, Larry Abramson went to high school in San Rafael, California and watched guide dogs with the trainers and students doing their work. "I never really understood what was going on."

No doubt, Larry wasn't--or isn't--alone. As a matter of fact, we'd bet that even of the thousands of us that raise these magnificent pups, probably 90% had the same question about the Guide using the traffic lights to determine when it was safe to cross streets....

Hope Center 4 Autism Hosts Lone Star Puppy Raisers

Lone Star Puppies Fred and Nura trotted over to Fort Worths' Hope Center 4 Autism this past Wednesday to visit with some kiddos and find out more about this amazing organization.

We were met by program Director Susan Wood and her husband-Founder, Glenn Wood. After about a 20-minute meet and greet with the staff, pups and the children, we were treated to a tour of the facility.

Needless to say the children loved the puppies and the pups loved all the attention from the children.

This is a truly incredible organization. The compassion for the children and passion for what the 14 professionals (all under the supervision of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst) do here, starts right at the top with Susan and Glenn. You just have to see it to believe it. It begins with Hope's visceral belief that autism is a recoverable disorder, with intense early intervention being vital to the recovery process. Hope's mission is to enable children on the autism spectrum and their families to live more fully functional lives. And by all indications they are doing just that.

Hope provides behavioral therapy to children with autism by focusing on language skills, cognitive development, self-help and the social and play skills necessary for successful and productive lives. As if that weren't enough, they also provide support for families affected by autism.

One of the keys to Hope's success is their individually-tailored programs. That is, the children aren't covered by one overall program. At Hope, each child has his or her own, specifically-designed and monitored program. Add to this Hope's application of Applied Behavior Analysis, (ABA) see: http://www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism/treatment/applied-behavior-analysis-aba and you begin to understand the richness of their approach.

Hope accepts students at any age and does everything they possibly can to accomodate every family that has a need. And they've doubled in size recently.

This Wednesday, John received his Guide, a beautiful yellow lab named Marcella. From all indications, it looks like it is a match made in Heaven. Our 16 year old young man is really in love with his new little girl, all 56 pounds of her.

"I just love her so much...I've never felt like this before!"

No doubt it's a relationship that will just get better and better as the years come along. Needless to say, we Lone Star Puppy Raisers are pretty excited and happy about John and Marcella and we can't wait to welcome them home. Their graduation ceremony is set for July 16th at the San Rafael Campus.

Oh, the small world part of the story? Marcella will be returning home to the North Texas area, where she'll have puppy sibblings, working Guide Pollyann and pups in training, Natura and Nura and career-change, big-little brother, Neutron. They all share Tiburon as daddy! Small world indeed.

I worked just a little down town at the lounge with her. I was able to

"The first day of Guide Dog School was super! I can't imagine what
tomorrow and the next few weeks will bring. I have learned my way
around the dorm. I have my leash. I have been trying to make it soft
and flexible. We had Prime rib and potato and 2 sides of vegetables
for dinner. Green Beans and Carrots. And oh, bread and butter!! I
can't wait for tomorrow...

Neither can we John!

It was early February that we met John Vickers and his mom Lisa when Lone Star Puppy Raisers visited The Criss Cole Center in Austin with Guide Dogs for the Blind (See: http://guidedogtx.blogspot.com/2011/02/capitol-experience.html). John and Lisa had traveled to Austin from their home in Athens, Texas to find out more about GDB and what it might be like for John, an experienced cane user, to have a Guide. All of us fell in love with John that day and he fell more in love with GDB... unbeknownst to us, John had begun the application process with GDB the previous Summer so that he could get his Guide this year when he turned 16. Smart guy!

So today, John was out at DFW among well-wishers for his 10:05 departure for San Francisco and San Rafael to get his new Guide and excel at the training.

Long-time friend and second mom to John, Jessica Evans was along with GDB Grad, Holly McKnight and her Guide Pollyann and Pollyann's half- sister, puppy in training, Nura. Holly's mom Kay and Jessica's mom Bea rounded out the send off committee.

Jessica, Holly and Pollyann escorted John through the Security check point and disappeared into the crowd on their way to the departure gate. When Jessica and Holly re-emerged from the send off, they were beaming with smiles each holding up 3 fingers. "There were three other people on the plane!" "There were only 3 people on the plane? I said." "NO! There are three people going to GDB!" As it turns out, there were two other GDB students, one first-timer and a five-time Guide user on their way too. So, we know John will have two new fast friends before he even sets foot in California.

John promises to keep us informed of what he experiences and all the good news at GDB. Stay tuned for updates, as we get them, we'll post 'em. It will be great fun to follow John on his exciting journey.

It wasn't but within minutes after Lone Star's newest puppy raiser Jennifer Riley joined the group that she shared a tremendous idea: "Why not do a mass internet fundraising campaign? It'll go viral in no time!"

Well, just a few short months later, say hello to Greater Giving. Basically, LSPR club members (or any of our hundreds of supporters) can set up a Personal Fundraising Page with their specific story and a request for support of Lone Star Puppy Raisers and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Emails then, with the invitation to visit the website and to forward to any others that might be interested, are sent. You can imagine how quickly, thousands will hear the great news about Lone Star Puppy Raisers and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Hear Those Lions Roar!

The McKinney Lions Club graciously hosted Lone Star Puppy Raisers for lunch at their regular meeting this past Wednesday. Maureen, Natura, Nura and Partner were there to take it all in and enjoy the rousing rendition of "Hear Those Lions Roar!" that kicked off the meeting. Club President, Cindy Peters presided over the meeting.

Jennifer and Partner gave a fact-filled presentation about Lone Star Puppy Raisers and Guide Dogs for the Bind. After viewing Soul Mates, we answered some great questions from the group of about 40. 1st Vice President, Neal Blades was favorably enough impressed by our group that he vowed to "spread the word" about LSPR and GDB.

The Lions Club has a long and nation-wide history of terrific support for vision causes and Guide Dogs for the Blind. It was a real treat for us to meet the McKinney Lions Club and share our passion for puppy raising. Lone Star Puppy Raisers and Guide Dogs for the Blind thank the McKinney Lions Club for their support.

GDB Grad Chris Bowman Returns to North Texas with New Guide

Just two short weeks ago today, Lone Star Puppy Raisers' newest friend was on his way to the GDB campus in San Rafael to begin training with his new Guide. We had just met Chris, a market analyst for Alcon, at our pups' birthday party at WineStyles the Thursday night before. Chris was there with Kristi, his lovely new bride of six months and Anzio, his big, handsome, yellow lab.

But, it'd been a bitterweet couple of days for Chris as the time was rapidly approaching for his Guide of nine years to retire. And you could sense the reality of it all from Chris and Anzio. It's hard to imagine what it must be like to retire your working guide; that bond has to be the strongest in the human-animal relationship world.

Fast forward to today: Chris and his new Guide Ashby, began their new life together. It started with negotiating SFO, a three-hour plane ride and finding their way out of DFW. All smoothe. Lucky for Ashby, this isn't Chris' first rodeo...Ashby is Guide # 4 for Chris. You can bet too that he'll also be under the watchful eyes of the retired Anzio who will surely mentor the new kid on the block.

We're very happy to be welcoming Chris and Ashby back to North Texas, the newest of nearly 12,000 Guide Dogs for the Blind's graduate teams. Congratulations Chris and Ashby, and Welcome HOME!!

By the way, Chris returns back to work at Alcon in a new job...on his last Friday before leaving for GDB, Alcon surprised him with a promotion at what Chris thought was going to be a going away party for Ashby. Nice!!

Lighthouse for the Blind Hosts Lone Star Puppy Raisers

There's this incredible agency throughout most of the United States and we're so very privileged to have ten of their facilities right here in Texas.

Today, Lone Star Puppy Raisers visited the Fort Worth office of Lighthouse for the Blind to see first-hand how this great non-profit provides training, employment and rehabilitation to the visually impaired.

Lighthouse currently employs approximately 70 legally blind individuals in varying job responsibilities.

We were graciously greeted by President and CEO Platt Allen III and Nancy Fisher, Director of Development. After introductions and a brief, yet very informative synopsis of the Lighthouse history, mission, operations and future plans, it was off to tour the 80,000 square foot facility.

'Lighthouse' Fort Worth boasts a 97% legally-blind workforce which produces over 200 products contracted by local, state and federal agencies. From pens and paper, to liquids and electronic flares, to medical testing kits to air-drop pallet cushion material, Lighthouse provides quality products for a whole host of uses.

We've touted the importance of partnering before and how it can make such a difference in results; whether the bond between a guide dog and its blind person or organizations that have similar goals. We were very glad to visit Lighthouse to see how we can begin to partner with them and help more in the community.

A BIG Weekend Indeed

A Beaming Sandi Alsworth With Her Lone Star Pups

We had our very own whirlwind blow into town last weekend, leaving a huge path of learning and future success for Lone Star Puppy Raisers and their pups. It lasted for three incredible days.

And by all indications, by the time the winds were dying down on Sunday, GDB CFR, "Tropical Storm Sandi" was pretty happy with her visit and the future guide dogs in North Texas. And so were Lone Star Puppy Raisers.

Day one began Friday with puppy evals at Bass Pro in Grapevine. Then it was on to Dave and Beth's for a group meeting and Pizza. It was a particulary long day for Sandi as her arrival at DFW was delayed by--you guessed it--weather.
Nonetheless, we had a very constructive meeting that evening, consuming the delicious GDB morsels of info and details that Sandi always seems to dish up. By 9 though we were all ready to call it a night and prepare for day two...

Which began with the remaining puppy evals at Southlake Town Center, followed by what else? Lunch of course! Then began the first of several training and socializing sessions. STC is such a great training area with just about every element needed for what we do. We walked, crossed busy FM 1709, did traffic observation, walked on crowded sidewalks, did stair work, practiced sit and down stays and walked over grates.

Then, to begin a "drinking from a fire hose" theme, it was on to the Southlake Fire Station. Luckily for us, we got some real quality time there before--as if almost scripted for our puppy socialization--the fire alarm went off signaling an emergency call. After calmly insuring ours and the pup's safety, firemen were on the rig and out the driveway in seemingly, seconds. Professionals...

Believe it or not, our next stop? Right! Back to Beth and Dave's where we had a general meeting with the pups and of course, we ate again. (Nice marinated Tri-Tip Dave!) We also got more nutritional GDB info too, but called it an early night.

There is tremendous energy in a real tornado, a very apt comparison to our CFR. So? That photo at the top of this post? It was taken at the end of day three. Eventhough relatively light in time spent compared to the two previous days, it was still a big session of obedience, dog distraction, recall and open-back stair work. All of we raisers and pups were pretty well spent by the time 4 o'clock rolled around.

But, look closely at that photo: there's no shortage of energy at all conveyed in Sandi... Our theory? Those seven little batteries, connected by the leads to that bright smile are what charge her up. It's a delightful thing to witness and be a part of.

It's a good thing she has so much passion, love and energy for GDB and her groups...she surely needed it later that night: it took her about SEVEN hours to get home to Phoenix...because of, yup, weather...

Why Relationships Matter

Simply put, because when they're good, so much can be done!

We saw just how true this is lately, on several different levels and think it's really worth barking about. Surely (and thankfully) these kinds of stories happen every day in thousands of circumstances, and thank goodness! We especially love them when we know about them firsthand.

Lone Star Puppy Raiser Shari Nederhoff knows about good relationships. You see it in her life with her husband and daughters and you see it in her relationships with her friends. Add to it that Shari is a 'doer', she gets things done. So it was no surprise to see Shari envision a plan, plant the seeds, water them, nurture them, and encourage the blooms as they exploded in 100x time lapse to become the truly amazing event that took place this morning in Frisco, Texas.

You see, Shari's dear friend, Stevie Patrick ran a 5K today along with over 2,200 other runners in support of the Head for the Cure Foundation, benifitting brain cancer research. And Stevie did it, just one day shy of the one-year anniversary of her diagnosis of a Grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma. Yes, there was brain surgery and yes, radiation treatments. And yes, Stevie continues to battle this horrid disease, just like so many other brain cancer survivors. And she and other brain cancer survivors ran the race today. A race and event that as of this morning had raised over $150,000 for brain cancer research, brought hundreds of volunteers together to support this event and all the good that will come from it.

It was the relationship that made it all happen...that sweet relationship...

Lone Star Puppy Raisers took part in the event as six individuals joined to form the "Pups for the Cure" race team.

And as you might have guessed, it was through a wonderful relationship that Pups for the Cure was born.

After finding out about Lone Star's support of the race, Kelly Fordham, account executive at our favorite, Brynn Bagot Public Relations, notified us that she wanted to be on our Lone Star Race Team to help support our efforts. "Er, ah...well, we don't really have a team...we just made a small sponsorship yesterday..." (April 28th).

Seemingly within moments, an informational blast email about Stevie and the event flew out to scores of people and jolted us too:

"I want to help LSPR support Stevie by starting our team and your support would mean so much..."

Kelly had already registered the team with HFTC and had put up the website. Within 10 days, "Pups" had 6 runners and had raised over $1,500!

The Pups for the Cure team? Andrea Georgi, Chelsea Beener, John Schwinger, Kelly Fordham, Lindsey Amos and Olivia Sirchio. Thank you!

This coming Saturday, there will be a huge race in Frisco, Texas benefitting the Head for the Cure Foundation. And Lone Star Puppy Raisers will be there as sponsors, supporters, racers and event staff! Our Pups for the Cure team has already raised $820 for the race.

It doesn't take too many degrees of separation before you find out that someone you know and-probably love-has been stricken with brain cancer. Our incredible loved one is Stevie Patrick of Frisco, Texas. In May last year, Stevie was diagnosed with a grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma. Stevie continues to battle her condition and inspire all of us who love her. Go Stevie!!

A Year Old !! We Need to Celebrate

It's not as if we don't already have enough to celebrate and share with our friends, but having our little gems turn a year old this May, well, we just couldn't pass up the opportunity to celebrate BIG.

Based on all the fun that everyone had at last September's Cabs for Labs blowout (we actually had about twice as many partiers join us as we had expected), this celebration will be even more fun.

Art in the Square and the Southlake Women's Club

Never ones to shy away from art, culture, charity and fun, Lone Star Puppy Raiser pups partnered with Sewell Cadillac today at the 4th Annual, Art in the Square festival in Southlake. The event runs through tomorrow, April 17th from 11:00AM to 6:00PM.

The Southlake Women's Club puts on the annual event, raising money for North Texas charitable organizations.

In 1985, six women and some cups of coffee started something big in Southlake. Today, the Southlake Women's Club has over 100 members and has donated over $1.4M to local charities. Why We Raise These Precious Creatures

An open letter from our leader, Acting President and CEO, Guide Dogs for the Blind, G. Morgan Watkins:

"Too often, we don’t even realize just how powerful the touch of a volunteer can be.

Sixteen years ago, I made the phone call that changed my life. I had grown tired of finding trash cans with my white cane, coffee tables with my shins, and tree branches with my face. I was weary of navigating convention centers and trying to make new business connections with people I could not spot in a crowd. A cane is such a poor conversation starter. Although my growing blindness never bothered me, I did aspire to the freedom I used to enjoy when I could race between gates in an airport or zip quietly down hallways at work. Sixteen years ago, I called Guide Dogs for the Blind.

However, if it had not been for one volunteer, I might have never made that call.

As my vision continued to fail over the years, I occasionally thought of how useful a guide dog might be. I had seen blind men and women, with their guide dogs, moving quickly through buildings and on sidewalks. As far as I knew, I would have to lose the remainder of my vision, to be totally blind, before I could partner with a guide dog. I didn’t know just how little I knew.

Before that fateful phone call, while on a business trip in Northern California, a good friend who worked in Silicon Valley asked me if I’d like to meet her family. I had heard wonderful things about her parents, how after their own children had grown, they had adopted many young children, all with significant disabilities. Her parents wanted to share their good life with some special kids. I went with her to her parents home and got to meet some truly extraordinary people. While there, I also met the mother’s sister. My friend’s aunt showed up with a puppy and I was intrigued by her story as well. Her aunt was raising a puppy for Guide Dogs for the Blind. I learned about how volunteers made these puppies very special, giving them the early love, respect, and social skills to enable their future training at this West Coast school. I had never heard of Guide Dogs for the Blind, but I fell in love with the program as I listened to this volunteer share her story, her puppy’s story, and the story of GDB.

That very special puppy raiser changed my life. Had we never met, I might have waited another decade to get a Guide Dog. Had we not talked, I might not have come to our school. Because of one puppy raiser, I took a chance, came to San Rafael, and discovered that I could see again through the eyes of my first guide, Fantom.

To all of you, during National Volunteer Week, I want to thank you for your dedication to a mission that makes a huge difference in the lives of so many blind men and women. Because of your volunteer spirit, we have phenomenal foster care providers, dedicated dog walkers, and wonderful puppy testers and socializers. Because you give of yourselves, we benefit from your efforts at the gift shops, the telephone console, on our Board, and in the Accounting Office. Because of you, we have great docents giving tours, safe drivers taking our students to churches and synagogues on the weekends, and the best breeder custodians and puppy raisers in the world. Because of all our volunteers, thousands of blind men and women have enjoyed greater freedom and independence.

Thank you for caring. Thank you for supporting this mission. Thank you for your gift of self.

The festivities will take place at our favorite Fort Worth digs, WineStyles at Montgomery Plaza on West 7th. You'll recall that we had a blowout party there last September when the pups were just 4 months old...

...and we say "shame on us" from deep in the bottom of our Texas Hearts for not letting all y'all know how many and where all y'all are from.

The STATS are in! Check the sidebar to the left and you'll be able to see how many visits we've had. Over time, we'll switch it up to portray weekly, monthly and total numbers.

But those numbers are only part of the story. For example, we had 1,000 hits last month! And 80 page hits yesterday. Wait, there's more: "Meant to Be" got 32 hits alone in just two days and is the most popular post this month!

But enough about us and the blog, what about Y'ALL??

Meant to Be

As puppy raisers, there's nothing more emotionally gripping than the intense hope for the success of our little charges. We dream of the day when all the formal training at Guide Dogs is complete and of handing the lead over to the pup's new person at Graduation Day; to that perfectly matched someone who will depend on that dog for so much.

But just like us lesser humans, not all pups can become "rocket surgeons." But they CAN serve in capacities with other high purpose, living long, healthy fun lives, partnering with just the right humans.

So in this post, we celebrate our big boy Neutron and wish him all the best as he trots off to be with his new perfect match...the Wilsons of McKinney: Chris, Cristi and CJ.

My dear Neutron – you stole my heart the minute you were placed in my arms on July 13, 2010 at just 8 weeks old. From that day forward, I poured my heart and soul into training you to be the best guide dog possible, as did Brian, Elizabeth and Hannah. You easily became part of our pack, our first boy dog to raise! Your eyes melt me each time I look at you – you are uniquely made; handsome as ever! I love the way your tail never stops wagging and sometimes even wags in circles, I love that you always have to be touching a person when chewing on a bone, I love how you prop up your left elbow on the front seat as you ride in the floorboard, I love the way you obey and eagerly come to me each time I call your name, I love the way you run with those long legs of yours, I love the way your eyes look at me each time I call your name, I love the way you go between my legs so your rump can be scratched. I just love you!

We have had some bumps along the way, and one bump you are having a hard time getting over – a bump that needs to be hurdled in order to be a good guide dog. So, it is with a very heavy heart, that I have to say good-bye to the dream of having you be a guide dog – God made you for a different job – a job of a well mannered and tremendously loved family dog, but sadly not in our pack, a new pack, picked especially for you.

We're growing! Two big nine and a half week old boys flew into DFW yesterday with Emily Brown-Leist from the San Rafael campus.

The lucky puppy raisers? New group member Jennifer Riley and puppy raiser Hannah Nederhoff are the new proud moms of "Price" and "Fred."

Price slept all through his first night, all the way until 4:30. "Wow, I never thought of 4:30 as 'sleeping in!'" said Jennifer.

Hannah, when asked by her mom Shari, "Hannah, how are you gonna have enough love for all the pups in our house?" characteristically replied, "my heart's big enough mom..." 'LOVE that girl.

Emily, Puppy Raising Manager for GDB is in town for the weekend with other GDB gurus to conduct strategy, planning and training sessions with Lone Star Puppy Raisers.

Our pups just turned 10 months old – we’ve been working on obedience and socializing our pups as often as we can. If you’ve been following our blog www.guidedogtx.blogspot.com, you know, we’ve been busy! LSPR are a great group of raisers, families and volunteers dedicated to helping Guide Dogs for the Blind and the visually impaired. We’re working hard and having lots of fun!!

We have an opportunity coming up next week that I wanted to share with you - if you have any interest in Lone Star Puppy Raisers or Guide Dogs for the Blind, we’ll have Meet-and-Greet and Puppy Handling session on Saturday, March 19, in the patio area of Central Market in Southlake. Staff from Guide Dogs for the Blind will be at the Meet and Greet to answer questions and we’ll be there to share our puppies and tell you about Lone Star Puppy Raisers (You might even get to meet our newest puppy member)! Let's be honest: we are pretty darn happy and proud to have our very own Texas GDB Grad, Holly McKnight from Arlington, advising and encouraging us, the Lone Star Puppy Raisers. You cannot imagine what an influence she's had on us.

So, it's no surprise to us that Holly has been selected as this quarter's spokesperson for Guide Dogs. And, she's in pretty good company; the one and only Betty White. It's all part of a capital campaign at Guide Dogs and there couldn't be any better spokeswomen. And Ms. White has committed $60,000 in matching funds to spur us all on.

If you're visiting Austin, y'all have to visit the State Capitol; you just should not miss it. And that's exactly what our pups suggested. It's a beautiful building in and out.

We thank everyone at the Capitol for their kind hospitality especially Janet Elliott, Communications Director for the Honorable Senator, Jane Nelson (Nura's Senator). Ms. Elliott made us feel right at home. She was joined by Beth and Natura and Nura and Kim for this photo op.

The pups thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the Capitol and even stuck their heads in at a session of the House. Beside the lesson in Civics, it was terrific practice for obedience, meet and greet, working on slick floors, stair work, elevators and security screening.

We'll be sure and visit again next time we are in the Lone Star's Capitol City.

Dallas LOGOLD !!

Those of you familiar with this blog know that we cherish our supporters. There are lots of really good reasons.

Today we shout out Black Lab Creative in Dallas, the creative minds behind our award-winning logo. Yes, award-winning! This past Thursday, Black Lab Creative was awarded the Gold Dallas "Addy" for their design of our Lone Star Puppy Logo.

Out of more than 400 entries, 44 entries took home Dallas Addy Gold, all of which automatically advance to the AAF District 10 Regional Addy competition. http://www.aafdallas.org/

So, the next stop is the Regional Awards which will be held in Oklahoma City this Spring. If we'd known that there were such awards, we would have predicted the Dallas win. Let's just hope...

Black Lab (yes, they really have dogs at the office) has been a terrific supporter of our puppy raising group right from the beginning. Not only did they design our logo, they also brained up the theme and invitations, flyers and tickets for our Cabs for Labs wine tasting event in Fort Worth. And as if that weren't enough, they came to the event too to show their support for LSPR.

Capitol Experience !

On Friday Feb 11, 2011 two puppies and their people from Lone Star Puppy Raisers visited students at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin. Puppy raisers shared and explained their roles of teaching obedience, house manners and socializing puppies to an eager crowd of students. Some of the students expressed an interest in training with a guide in the future. The children were taught the importance of not petting working guides. This isn't because the guide dogs are dangerous, it's because of the need for them to stay focused on thieir job and their person. Some handlers do allow their dog to be petted while they are working, but asking is always the first rule. The kids were quite happy to have the intimate time with Natura and Nura.

The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) serves as a special public school in the continuum of statewide placements for students who have a visual impairment. Students, ages 6 through 21, who are blind, deafblind, or visually impaired, including those with additional disabilities, are eligible for consideration for services on the TSBVI campus. It is also a statewide resource to parents of these children and the professionals who serve them, from birth through transition from school.

We were graciously greeted and hosted by Gloria Bennett, Director of Community Resources for TSBVI. After a brief tour of the new campus (under construction), we joined the kids in the cafeteria for a meet and greet. The pups loved all the attention and the kids loved lovin' on the pups.

As if Friday's activities weren't enough, Satutrday brought more fun in Austin at the Criss Cole Center for Rehabilitation Services with the arrival of four more Lone Star Puppies. Guide Dog staff including Texas Field Service Representative Bill Archie, Grad Services and certified instructor Marc Gillard and Alumni Association Director Theresa Duncan and her working guide Dario also joined in.

The Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center (CCRC) within the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) Division for Blind Services is a comprehensive vocational rehabilitation training facility working in partnership with consumers to help them achieve their employment and independent living goals. Serving as a residential adult training facility in Austin, CCRC offers comprehensive training in core skills such as orientation and mobility (O&M), Braille, Daily Living Skills/Career Development, technology, Adjustment to Blindness Seminar, and advanced career guidance. http://www.dars.state.tx.us/dbs/ccrc/index.shtml

The morning was officially kicked off by GDB Acting CEO, Morgan Watkins and his guide, Will. Morgan was happy to have his opening "Howdy!" resoundingly responded to as he was fixin' to delight the crowd with his incredibly engaging and crowd-pleasing passion for GDB. Morgan's personal story from his childhood through college and his career and journey as a blind person arriving at the top spot for America's premier guide dog school inspired everyone in the room. Simply put, there's no better example, spokesperson or leader for GDB.

The am session was geared toward people interested in obtaing a guide dog. Bill, Marc and Theresa gave very informative presentations about every aspect of life at GDB and the GDB process. Participants were excited to learn that the training, transportation, room and board, follow-up care and some vet expenses are covered by GDB. Several Orientation and Mobility (O and M) instructors in attendance added their enthusiasm and support for the program.

Interested cane users were able to take part in a live dog walk. Dario (Theresa's guide) and Polly Ann (Holly's guide) volunteered their skills and were joined by Guide Dog in Traning "Mcgee," a male yellow lab who is nearly complete in his formal guide dog training. Several students jumped at the opportunity to work with a guide with Bill and Marc's expert instruction.

The day ended with GDB alums, guests and puppy raisers enjoying a delicious Jason's Deli lunch. Throughout the meeting grads noticed the Lone Star puppies receiving kibble treats for their exemplary behavior, so they got to 'dine' too.

Guide Dogs for the Blind Newest Puppy Raising Group

When Lone Star Puppy Raisers was just a 'twinkle in the eye' of our experienced North Texas puppy raisers, little did we know that things would happen so fast! After all, Guide Dogs for the Blind hadn't ventured out of the eight Western States in over 20 years and the economy wasn't the best for a non-profit to be expanding. GDB was smart to establish LSPR on a one-year evaluation basis, and we understood that.

August 2010 Six Month's Later

So imagine how happy we were to learn early this week that LSPR had won a place 'deep in the heart' of GDB and in just six short months been elevated to full-fledged puppy group status for Guide Dogs for the Blind! Very happy.

But what we continue to be happiest about is the incredible support that Guide Dogs for the Blind and the North Texas community has showered on us. THANK YOU, One and All!

And with our new designation comes new responsibilties and the beginning of the fulfillment of the dream. As we've posted before, our goal is to grow our group not only in North Texas, but to help establish other puppy raising groups throughout the Lone Star. There certainly is plenty of need. So this early designation gives us the green light to press on with our plan of doing our part to assist some of the best people and one of the best organizations in the world.

NatGeo Wild Goes to the Dogs

Tune in on Monday, February 21 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, 7:00 PM CT/MT, to watch NatGeo Wild’s three-hour series premiere of “Blue Collar Dogs.” Guide Dogs for the Blind will be featured during the first hour episode entitled “Canine MD.”

During the first hour, the episode will cover from puppy to Guide Dog team and include a variety of interviews on the San Rafael campus including licensed instructor Ben Cawley (who trained our very own North Texas grad Holly McKnight) and GDB team Olivia Norman and Guide Dog Jim. The cameras also follow GDB team David Cooper and Guide Dog Parnelli as they in-home train on the streets of New York City with licensed instructor Jim Dugan. Additional canines highlighted in “Canine MD” include hearing dogs, dogs for diabetics, epileptic seizure and cancer detection dogs.

Lindsey, Melville and Wasp Barcode Technologies

As a puppy in training, Melville gets to go to work with his Puppy Raiser, Lindsey Amos, every day, which means Melville’s 8 am to 5 pm is spent as an “unofficial employee” for Wasp Barcode Technologies.

Community service projects and charity work are an integral part of the beliefs and values of Wasp. Wasp believes in corporate social responsibility and the value of charity work and is a proud supporter of Melville and Guide Dogs for the Blind. At the end of 2010, Wasp shared a holiday e-card with its customers, choosing to make a donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind instead of sending a traditional printed Christmas card.

More recently, Wasp is a Communitas Award applicant for supporting and donating to Guide Dogs for the Blind and incorporating guide dog puppies in training into the office life at Wasp. Communitas Awards honor companies and individuals that help the less fortunate and are changing the way they do business to benefit their employees, communities, and environment. Training guide dog puppies in a work place is essential, because it simulates a real life situation that a visually impaired person might encounter on a daily basis. Melville does everything from attending meetings and business lunches to accompanying Lindsey to the bathroom to ensure that he is prepared for his mission in life.

Lone Star Supports Arizona Raisers

It's a happy day when the puppy truck shows up. And this past Saturday was a very happy day for Guide Dogs' Arizona Puppy Raising Clubs. Members from the greater Phoenix area, Tuscon and Flagstaff were on hand to greet the newest puppy arrivals along with supporters from Texas and Oregon.

The puppy truck makes several trips a year to the eight western states delivering new pups to raisers and picking up pups that are on their way back to GDB to continue with their formal guide training.

Beth and Dave Adams, leaders of GDB's Texas Lone Star Puppy Raisers along with sons Connor and Landon were on hand to assist in handing out the little fluff balls to new and repeat puppy raisers. Dave's dad, Mat, took part in the event too by handing puppy 'London' over to his new raiser. "It was the highlight of the whole trip," Mat said, visiting from San Diego.

"What a great day to see these pups go to great volunteers to be raised!" said Dave. No doubt, Beth couldn't help but have feelings of excitement for the eventual, first puppy truck delivery with new pups as our Lone Star group grows...here's Beth below trying to sneak off with one of the pups when no one was watching...

Despite the happiness of the new pups' arrival, the day was also bittersweet as many raisers said a temporary 'good bye' to the pups they've spent the last 14 to 18 months with.

Sandi Alsworth, leader of the Arizona group and community field rep for the Texas group emceed a touching ceremony which included a sweet then and now video of the returning puppies. There wasn't a dry eye in the place.

The event was held at the Rose Mofford Center at the Foundation for Blind Children in Phoenix. FBC has seen its services grow over 300% in the past ten years and is an essential resource to blind and visually impaired children and adults. They are also terrific hosts--we thank them for their incredible hospitality.

DFW - One Millionth Soldier

While the Cowboys may be America's Team, it's no secret that DFW is the American Military's airport. Every day, hundreds of North Texans and others honor the troops transiting to or from their assignments overseas by greeting and thanking them for their service at America's Airport. Yesterday, one of the 148 troops returning home was the one millionth soldier to pass through DFW. And while that individual soldier wasn't identified, it made no matter. It was a celebration to honor ALL the troops.

Dignitaries including Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, United States Congressman, Sam Johnson, Executive Director-Tuskegee Airmen, Mr. Tom Freeney, Maj. Gen. Gina S. Farrisee, director Military Personnel Management and Army Chief of Staff General George W. Casey Jr. were among the crowd welcoming the troops home.

"This is the first time I've been asked to take a picture with puppies!" the General beamed. The pups obviously knew of the General as they obeyed his every command.

The "Welcome Home a Hero Program" began in June 2004 as a joint effort by DFW International Airport, the North Texas Commission and the Colleyville Chamber of Commerce. Of course, it takes a lot of planning and effort to make the soldiers' transition through DFW a seemless and comfortable one. And that's where all the other partners of this program come in. They include USO-DFW, the DFW Airport Staff, the Irving Fire Department, DFW Airport Fire and Rescue, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Donna Cranston and Defenders of Freedom and many others.

Army Commander Lt. Colonel Patrick McAfee heads up the DFW effort and is assisted by Sgt. Major Victor Allen. Together and with the support of their staff, this program has become an incredible welcome that troops look forward to.

Two of the funnest troop greeters that come to the airport regularly are the "Huggin' and Kissin' Grandmas" who make a habit of 'planting a big one' and giving a huge hug to the soldiers as they pass through. The two delightful ladies have been coming from their homes in Grand Prairie since the beginning nearly every day. What dedication and expressions of love...

The big story of the day though was about our troops and their service to our country.

It was an honor for Lone Star Puppy Raisers to attend the event, meet the dignitaries and show support for our Soldiers. Thank you Lt. Colonel McAfee and all who welcomed us.

Sister puppies Natura and Nura got to hob-nob last week with the crowd at the VIP opening of the newest Smashburger restaurant on McKinney in downtown Dallas. Two of the restaurant's investors, Dallas Cowboys star linemen Leonard Davis and Marc Colombo were on hand to welcome guests, talk football and tout the gourmet burgers.

It's a good bet you'll see puppy raisers and pups again at any of the six Dallas/Fort Worth Smashburgers. Not only is the food and service great, but it's always good practice and training for our pups to being around all the delicious smells, busy environment, great customers--and the Cowboys!!

Our pups are nearly eight months old now, so it's a lot more likely that you may see one--or all of them together--out and about in the North Texas Metroplex, getting their socialization, obedience training or just out for their special brand of walk. And, it could be at your favorite restaurant, a library, car dealership, concert, park, museum or where a balarina is being fitted for her ballet shoes.

We're always happy to meet you, answer questions and introduce you to our pups. So always feel free to come up and say "howdy" when you see an adorable yellow or black lab puppy in a green puppy coat.

Nura loves on MP

It's been nearly four months since our blow-out debut at WineStyles over in Fort Worth last year. But one of the auction items was recently claimed by an excited eleven year-old named Mary-Peyton. Her mom and dad snagged the "Follow a Puppy Raiser" outing for a day, specifically for the 5th-grader's birthday present. And what a present it was!

Puppy Raiser Kim Hart accompanied "MP"--as she's known to her family--and her mom Johanna on a great afternoon, walking, training and socializing Nura. The girls all had lunch at the Mi Cocina Fort Worth at Hulen and I-30 then took to some window shopping and obedience training for Nura.

MP could barely contain her enthusiasm for the afternoon and "did a really nice job with Nura," said Kim. "She learned the commands almost immediately and made it clear to Nura who was boss." They all walked through a few stores as the day came to a close, giving MP and Nura the opportunity to work in some close quarters and meet and greet the public.

All in all it was a terrific day for everyone. Who knows? Perhaps we have another future puppy raiser in the making. We know this: Nura won't ever forget MP or her day out with her!

The Lovely Party Girl and Marzipan with Lone Star Pups at the Ballet

Never let it be said that Lone Star pups don't enjoy culture and the Season's spirit! Tuzer Ballet in Richardson, Texas celebrated its 26th anniversary of performing The Nutcracker at the Eisemann Center on Sunday and the pups were right there to enjoy the show. Several of the pups appeared to have quite an interest in the performance, perhaps because one of the puppy club's raisers was on stage, dancing up a storm. Fourteen-year old Elizabeth Nederhoff played the dual roles of a party girl and Marzipan in two of the acts and was flawless in her performances. What a great night for all who attended...especially Maureen, Miranda, Nura, Neutron, Melville and Natura. We're ordering Tutus for the pups...

Still "Sharing the Love" Five Months Later

Lone Star Pups and Raisers joined Sewell Subaru in Dallas to support Sewell's "Share the Love" campaign. What a great way for the pups to celebrate their seven-month birthday!

Sewell General Manager Chris Chick and the Sewell team were once again terrific hosts as they welcomed all and kicked off the campaign. Sewell is donating $250 for every new car sold or leased until January 3, 2011 to the buyer's choice of five charities. All in all, Sewell will donate up to $5 million. You'll remember that Sewell donated $10,000 to Lone Star Puppy Raisers - Guide Dogs for the Blind earlier this year.

LSPR Pups Visit Girl Scouts

Members of the 4th grade, Greenhill Girl Scout Troop in Addison, Texas enjoyed the company of Lone Star Pups in mid November and earned a Girl Scouts "Plants and Animals" Badge while seeing first-hand the wonder and importance of the animal/human partnership. To earn the badge the girls had to complete six of nine available activities. "The lesson on service animals and how humans and animals communicate and the GDB training process fit the bill perfectly," said Scottie Pearson, teacher and Troop Leader at Greenhill Elementary. The troop gave fleece puppy blankets to each of our puppies as a part of their "Operation Kindness," like the ones they had made for animal shelters. The girls had great questions and were exceptional hosts. Our pups LOVED them! Just look how much the pups loved their new blankees!

It's official! The Cold Noses, Warm Hearts 2011 Datebook will go on sale November 30th and be available at Gittings studio in Fort Worth and Three Dog Bakery at the Southlake and Plano Stores.

The 6" x 8", spiral-bound datebook with fantastic animal pictures will sell for $19.95. Of course, we'll be partial to the October Lone Stars, but the entire calendar promises to be a great item and a terrific gift.

Proceeds will go to various rescue groups in the DFW area. This is a nice opportunity to help a worthy cause and highlight Guide Dogs for the Blind and Lone Star Puppy Raisers.

Lone Star Pups were honored recently by being asked to be included in a brand new calendar, sales proceeds of which will benefit animal causes. We'll have more on the calendar later--and how you can get one.

We wish all of you could have been at Gittings Photography in Fort Worth to see how well behaved our six pups were during the shoot. But then, it was only ten minutes from start to finish!! It's as if our boys and girls new they had to be on their best behavior...

Maybe it's just because we are immersed in raising our Lone Star Puppies and have a hightened sense for the human-K9 relationship, but have you noticed too the seemingly huge increase lately in the partnerships between people and pups? Whether it's dog rescue groups, companion dogs, therapy dogs, or the many others, it seems like people are really waking up to the talents of dogs from every walk of life and for every walk of life.

The City of Fort Worth recently partnered with Pet Smart to establish an adoption center in southwest Fort Worth. And, in San Jose, California several months ago, firemen finally called in their arson dog after hours of investigation at a terrible school fire. The dog found the accelerant and the source of the fire in just minutes! It seems like dogs are finally waking us humans up!

Come see Susannah Charleson, New York Times best-selling author and her search and rescue dog, "Puzzle" as she discusses their work as a Search and Rescue team. Susannah's best seller "Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search and Rescue Dog" chronicles their life together with heart-warming and completely fascinating stories of their life adventures. Susannah's presentation and interactive audience participation style are a MUST FIND!

As if Susannah and Puzzle's story weren't enough, we'll also be joined by the interim President and CEO of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Mr. Morgan Watkins. Morgan retired from U.T. as the head of the I.T. department and has since been tirelessly dedicating his partnering and "friend" raising efforts to GDB. He's the first visually-impaired person to lead a guide dog organization, and are we ever glad that it's ours! Morgan blasts his love and enthusiasm for guide dogs, partnering and Guide Dogs for the Blind in a rousing talk. He'll have you laughing, crying and thinking deeply with his powerful message and down-home, Texas story telling style.

Puppy's Pack...the House (Exclaimation Point)

It was S.R.O. for most of the night at "Cabs for Labs" in Fort Worth last Thursday evening. We estimate over 150 guests passed through our puppy party at WineStyles, tasting terrific wines, petting and loving on six really well-behaved pups, mingling and bidding on some pretty nice silent auction items.

Our "Pour" hostess and wine tasting expert, Guynell Whetstone was really busy the entire time, getting out the tasting samples and telling guests about the Lange Twins Winery's Cabs, Chardonnays and other terrific wines. And at times, it was to a seeminly endless line of guests.

Guests enjoyed a great cheese assortment, chips and delicious Salsas provided by Mrs. Renfro's Foods, tasty Chicken Wraps from Boomer Jacks and sweet "Bundtlettes" from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Our six pups got plenty of attention and in return guests got lots of info about Lone Star Puppy Raisers, Guide Dogs for the Blind and our partnering Mission.

"Doggie Bags" with Wuf dog biscuits, Nothing Bundt Cakes gift certificates and a bottle of Mrs. Renfro's Salsa among other wine-related and Guide Dogs gifts went home with guests that made a $10 donation. "Born to Lead" T shirts and Lone Star Puppy Raiser caps were available for sale too.

All in all it was a terrific evening. We really enjoyed sharing our pups, our story and our mission.

We've gotten some very touching and heartfelt comments from one of our Army Moms. We can only add our sincere thanks to her and all that make this sacrifice...

Here are Army Mom LeNora's sentiments:

"Thank you so much for your kind note and the photo.
I have to share this with you and if you would forward to your group, I would appreciate it. I hope that my honesty and the graphic nature of what I am going to convey will not offend anyone. That is not the intent. The intent is to convey how important your work is and the level in which you may not know of how it reaches others.
Please know that what you and your group do, is very important and vital to those individuals who will be receiving an extension of what someday will be themselves............ a dog that will love and aid them for whatever they need. During numerous conversations with our service members, they have expressed how much they enjoy seeing the pups prior to their leaving. They enjoy seeing the "life" and innocence and the feel of their coat. During deployment, they see numerous animals which are not in the best of condition. However, some replace those thoughts with the memory of seeing the pups prior to deployment and for a time, things are right with the world.

So, I thank you all for your "big hearts." Keep it up - we need you!

Remember the "It Takes a Village..." post a couple weeks back where we talked about Fort Worth's 360 West Magazine? Yesterday, they became North Texas' BEST magazine: Here's the Lone Star Puppy Story in September's issue...

California-based Guide Dogs for the Blind has expanded its training program to Texas, a first after20 years, and volunteers with LoneStar Puppy Raisers have taken on the task of socializing six little balls of fur and teeth who’ll later go through formal guide dog training. In July, Fort Worth’s Brion and Kim Hart traveled to California to accompany the group on its flight to Texas where they all received a rockstar welcome, and now the pups are settled in with five other Lone Star Families who live in North Texas.

GDB is one of the top training organizations in the country, and local volunteers follow a set program of obedience, house training and socialization with the support of GDB staff. Beth and David Adams of Southlake are the designated leaders of Lone Star Puppy Raisers and help their fellow “foster” families, most of whom have raised several puppies for other groups. The puppies stay in Texas for 14 to 18 months before going back to the San Rafael headquarters. “When they leave, it’s very emotional, but it’s like sending your child off to college,” says Beth.

Puppy raisers are invited to graduation and the ceremonial handing off of the leash to the dogs’ new owners. “It’s also a proud day when you know you’re helping a blind person get a companion who’ll make their life better.” And sometimes, when a dog doesn’t quite master the necessary skills or retires, they can come home again.

You can hardly ever travel through DFW Airport without seeing some of our troops making their way to or from their assignments. God Bless our Troops!

Well this past Wednesday, Lone Star Puppy Raiser puppies, Miranda, Maureen, Neutron and Nura took their puppy raisers out to the airport and did their civic and patriotic duty. About 50 soldiers got to love on the pups before shipping out. It's always great to see the smiles on the troop’s faces as they hug a puppy. Some say it's the last "Kiss" they will receive on US soil!

The pups and raisers were warmly welcomed by Lt. Colonel Patrick McAfee, who is no stranger to guide dog puppies and who just a week ago, hosted President and First Lady Laura Bush at DFW as they welcomed home troops returning for R&R. Colonel McAfee heads the military assistance branch at DFW and is responsible for the daily operations for troops arriving and departing. He is often accompanied by his career change pup, "Scout."

It's always an honor to shake a Hero's hand or offer puppy kisses as they arrive and depart from DFW. If you'd like to join us next time we "Greet the Troops," we'd be happy to have you join us. Troops arrive and depart daily from DFW but you will see us there the second Saturday of every month.

First Formal Meeting!

Lone Star Puppy Raisers are deeply committed to helping fill the tremendous need for guide dogs. Texas alone is the 4th largest user of guide dogs in North America.

Lone Star Puppy Raisers conducted its first all-member meeting this past weekend under the leadership of its great Community Field Representative (CFR), Sandi Alsworth.

It was a packed three days of training for the pups and raisers with other important activities including fund-raising brain-storming and sharing our mission with potential future puppy raisers and supporters. Guide Dog user Holly McKnight and her Guide Polly Ann even came to lend their support! Thank you Holly and Polly!

Sandi sees Lone Star having huge potential for growth and is very excited about the prospect. "By this time next year we should double!" While a seemingly lofty target, the necessary enthusiasm, procedures and methods are already in place and promise to yield terrific results.

It was the first of many more great meetings to come!

Boy Howdy! Can them Guide Dogs for the Blind Folks throw a great bash or whut??

About 500 pups from all stages of Guide Dog life and other dogs, and nearly 1,200 people converged on the San Rafael campus Saturday to enjoy, food, friends and FUN. By the end of the day, party goers had enjoyed rousing speeches, training demonstrations, great food, shopping, contests and all-in-all, just a beautiful day under the sun at Fun Day's "Boot Scootin' Bow Wow.

And how gracious and welcoming all the folks that greeted Lone Star Puppy Raisers were--y'all made us feel right at home! Thank you one and all deep from the bottom of our hearts!

Of ALL the things that have amazed us at Lone Star Puppy Raisers, the most touching has been the incredible outpouring of community support. From East Dallas to West Fort Worth, our efforts have been vigorously rewarded with help from very generous, community-minded businesses of every sort. We'll expand on each of our Friends and Sponsors as we blog along, but today we thank 360 West Magazine.

Months ago, when Lone Star Puppy Raisers was just a gleam in our collective eye, we learned about the passion for animals that 360 West editor Meda Kessler has and displays every month in her 360 West Magazine. Meda is a puppy-rescue softie with four quadrupeds ruling her household. Busy freeways don't even deter her rescues.

Tell Me Something Good

The last two of six precious little Labradors arrived at DFW Airport last night to a happy crowd of about 50 supporters and local media.

TAKE A PUPPY!!

Especially, a Guide Dogs for the Blind Puppy.

This was day two of our delivery schedule for the Texas-bound pups, Natura and Maureen and everything started out perfectly. Early arrival into SFO, happy crewmembers with gifts from Texas--Wuf Doggie Biscuits for their Terriers, Dachshunds and Labs at home--and an apparent on time departure at noon back to DFW. Telephone calls to Susan and Beth about all the good news about their new pups.

Rings the cell phone...automated message from USAir: "we regret to inform you..."

Now, flight cancellations happen all the time, but not to US! NOT TODAY! WE HAVE A SCHEDULE TO MEET! PUPPIES TO DELIVER!!

Ticket counter: "Aaawwwwhhh!! I love your puppy, how sweet is she??!!" Yes, isn't she adorable? She and her little friend right over there, equally as sweet, had their flights cancelled just a little bit ago...

Within minutes, we were on our way over to United, a quick seven-minute walk to our new, confirmed flights that would get all of us back to DFW a scant 66 minutes later than our original schedule. Thank you USAir and United!

We love it when a plan comes together, especially when there are GDB Puppies to help us with it!

Here are the little darlings...right out of the puppy delivery truck with Kim and Craig, GDB puppy delivery driver and with a new friend, Laura Dowd, DVM from Tierra Santa, CA., who just couldn't resist these two gorgeous little girls.

Two Down, Four to Go!!

Or, "WhooHOOO!" as Shari Nederhoff, one of the two, teary-eyed Lone Star Puppy Raisers said tonight at DFW when her new pup "Neutron" arrived to a crowd of 15 supporters.

Lindsy Amos simply took her new pup "Melville" in her arms and said, "that's one of the names I picked for him!"

The two eight-week old Labrador Retrievers had just spent about 8 hours on their journey from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California to SFO to DFW. "They were perfect little travelers" said Kim Hart, one of the transporters.

Shari and Lindsey will spend the next fourteen to sixteen months with the other Lone Star Puppy Raisers prepairing these two and four other little pups for their formal training to become among the most respected guide dogs in North America.

But, their journey today was nothing compared to the incredible assistance of mobility and independence that they'll provide for the visually-impaired persons that they'll be paired with in no time at all.

You can't imagine how many times we get this question. It's a question that can get easily lost on us because the outpouring of support has been absolutely amazing.

Well, there are numerous ways to help Lone Star Puppy Raisers, Guide Dogs for the Blind and the thousands of visually-impaired people all over North America that depend on our success.

No doubt, we have a compelling story and so many people we run into tell us of their wonderful experience with our (or a similar) organization. So it's a no brainer for some folks; they help, and do so gladly.

That Was Fast!!

Doesn't it just seem like yesterday?!...that we heard that Guide Dogs for the Blind was going to support our experienced group of Texas puppy raisers and have us help them launch their first-ever puppy raiser group outside of the eight western states? Yup, it sure seems like it.

Fast forward one month.

Six pups: four females; two males. All Labs. Three Yellow, three Black. All coming to Texas.

Lone Star Puppy Raisers and Guide Dogs for the Blind...a match made in Heaven.

But, it wasn't just a walk (with a pup) in the park. GDB challenged us; BIG time!

"Not in the budget, a new group. Can you help raise the money to support the effort?"

And today, we're two-thirds of the way to meeting their challenge. And what an amazing and exhilarating ride it's been!

Our group leaders, Beth and Dave Adams have completely blown the wheels off of leadership, inspiration, effort and results. And, as you might imagine, our group has absolutely risen to the challenge!

Every single one of us, Donna and David Wright, Shari, Brian, Elizabeth and Hannah Nederhoff, Connor and Landon Adams, Lindsey Michelle Amos, Nancy and John Eckl, Susan and Kent Ladymon, Tammy, Jim, Eric, Megan and Amy Jorgensen, Kim and Brion Hart are completely dedicated to helping the vision impaired get new independence, new mobility and know the beauty and bonding of the human-animal relationship.

Partnership...it's the mission of Guide Dogs for the Blind and it's what we LOVE doing.

What terrific news for Texas and Lone Star Puppy Raisers! July 13th, 14th, and 15th, our six little pups will arrive two each day at DFW Airport.

On the 15th, the last two pups will arrive with great fanfare to a crowd of supporters, press and all of the very happy Lone Star Puppy Raisers.

This is the first new state expansion for Guide Dogs for the Blind and Lone Star Puppy Raisers are ecstatic that it's right here in North Texas!

Arrivals will be at the E Concourse Baggage Claim E-5 all three nights, Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:35PM and Thursday at 4:15PM. Please come out and help celebrate this historic event!!
